Sonya uses printed and textured surfaces as starting points for her practice. Drawing on the work of women artists such as Janice Biala (1903-2000) and her intimate interior Yellow Still Life (c. 1955), along with the interior scenes composed of overlapping colours, patterns, and shapes seen in the work of Pamela Phatsimo Sunstrum (b.1980), Sonya examines representations of women and their roles within traditional patriarchal constructs. Moving between abstraction and figuration, Sonya considers duality in her visual language as a means to explore the different aspects of womanhood in society today.
